Camp Report: Bolts QBs Show Flashes on Day 15 (2024)

The Chargers got back to work Monday, donning full pads for a 90-plus minute session at The Bolt.

The Chargers are scheduled to practice at 12:30 p.m. for the next two days, but Wednesday will not be a joint practice with the Rams as originally planned.

"Wasn't good for them logistically," Chargers Head Coach Jim Harbaugh said Monday. "If it's not good for them, it's not good for us."

Here is the Chargers Camp Report from Monday's practice:

1. QBs show progress

Quarterbacks have been the topic du jour of late for the Bolts, especially after Saturday night's uneven preseason opener.

The Chargers on Monday released quarterback Casey Bauman while also releasing wide receiver Praise Olatoke.

Harbaugh said Saturday that he wanted to see a week of practice reps before he determined which quarterback would start Saturday against the Rams in the second preseason game.

The Chargers Head Coach went into detail Monday on exactly what he was looking for from that group.

"Just really putting themselves in the mindset of the game," Harbaugh said. "The speed of it, the conditioning of it, just all facets. The physicality of it.

"The only way to really do that in practice is to put yourself in that mindset," Harbaugh added. "Treat it all like it's third-and-6. Every route on air, every drop[back] ... even playing catch. Just the mindset. But it's the same for other positions, too."

Justin Herbert watched practice as the three other quarterbacks on the roster — Easton Stick, Luis Perez and Max Duggan — led their respective offenses in that order.

Stick's best moments came in a 7-on-7 drill when he was dialed in and completed all nine passes he threw.

Stick began with short completions over the middle to Will Dissly and Donald Parham, Jr. before finding DJ Chark for a chunk play of 20-plus yards. Stick and Chark connected on the next two plays, too.

Stick took a few plays off as Perez came in, with his best throw being a pass to Ladd McConkey that just beat the outstretched hands of Tarheeb Still.

Stick returned to the huddle and completed his final four passes of the drill, the first of which went to Chark again. Quentin Johnston and Kimani Vidal had receptions before Stick found Luke Benson for an explosive play to move the chains.

Harbaugh offered a funny one-liner to Benson after the play as he shouted," May the force be with you, Luke," to the undrafted rookie tight end.

Stick later moved the chains on a pair of third-down passes with completions to Jaelen Gill and Brenden Rice.

Perez, who led the second-team offense Monday, had a nice play early in practice when he found a wide-open Elijah Dotson in the flat for a 20-plus yard gain.

Perez played for the United Football League's Arlington Renegades this past spring. He led the UFL in completions (225), passing yards (2,309) and passing touchdowns (18).

Harbaugh on Monday had praise for Perez, who signed with the Bolts on Tuesday.

"Arrow up. For being here for [almost a week], he's acquitted himself as well as a guy probably could," Harbaugh said. "Excited about him. Coaching him up, got to get the tempo going, got to get the huddle going.

"He hasn't been familiar with the verbiage and the playcalling. For a guy who's been here [since Tuesday], pretty outstanding," Harbaugh added. "Now we want more. But he's attacking it. He's here early, staying late. Doing everything in his power."

2. Colson gets in the mix

Junior Colson continues to make progress.

The Bolts rookie linebacker participated in individual drills at Monday's practice, the first time he has done so in camp.

Colson, a recent third-round pick who played for Harbaugh at Michigan, underwent an appendectomy before training camp started.

"Progressing back … you can see he's working back into things," Harbaugh said.

3. Morris-Brash continues to flash

Rookie undrafted edge rusher Tre'Mon Morris-Brash turned heads in the first few weeks of camp and was impressive Saturday with a pressure generated against the Seahawks.

The former Central Florida standout continued to impress Monday as he made a pair of strong plays in the backfield.

First, Morris-Brash flew around the edge to "sack" Duggan in a team drill. He later tallied a tackle for loss in a 9-on-7 run session.

Morris-Brash later matched up with Tyler McLellan on three reps in a 1-on-1 drill in the trenches.

Morris-Brash used speed to win the first in quick fashion but McLellan earned the edge in the second rep by halting a spin move. Morris-Brash used a power move on a physical third rep that saw McLellan initially hold his own before the tackle hit the turf.

The best battle, of course, came between Rashawn Slater and Khalil Mack.

Mack won the first rep with a nifty swim move but Slater responded with a stalemate on the next encounter to earn the win.
